THE MCCURDY’S LAMENT

with 4 comments

IN THE END

IT ISN’T OUTSIDE FORCES

INCIDENTS OR ACCIDENTS

THAT BECOME OUR UNDOING

ITS THE MISTAKEN BELIEF

THAT WE OWN THE LUXURY

OF UNLEASHING OUR ANGER

FRUSTRATIONS AND PAIN

ON OUR OWN

IT’S THE THOUGHT

THAT

SOMEHOW

OUR JOINT BETRAYALS

ONE AGAINST THE OTHER

ARE SOMEHOW

IN SOME WAY

ACCEPTABLE

IT IS THE BELIEF

THAT WE HOLD

LIKE CHILDREN CLINGING TO FAIRYTALES

AND MISBEGOTTEN BELIEFS

THAT

IN THE END

WE WILL OWN

THE FORGIVENESS

OF LOVE

AND LAUGHTER WILL

SOMEHOW COMBINE AND HARMONIZE

AND WILL NOT CEASE

ITS SUCCOR

BUT WHAT IF WE’RE WRONG

WHAT IF

THERE REALLY ARE

SOME PAINS PAST BEARING

WHAT IF

DEATH DOES NOT WAIT

PAST MCCURDY PRIDE AND

PREJUDICE

WHAT IF

WE ARE TORN APART

NOT FROM WITHOUT

BUT FROM WITHIN

WHAT IF

WE DO NOT

HAVE THE LUXURY

OF CHOICE

IN OUR ENDLESS

MOODS AND INNER DISLOYALTIES

THE ONLY ONES

WHO CAN KILL THE MCCURDYS

ARE

THE MCCURDYS

BECAUSE WE’RE THE ONLY ONES

WHO

CAN GET CLOSE ENOUGH

TO LAND

THE KILLING BLOW

I WONDER

WHEN WOUNDING EACH OTHER

BECAME A FEASIBLE ACTION

I WONDER

WHEN IT BECAME ACCEPTABLE

TO TOSS AWAY BLOOD

IN FAVOR

OF FRIENDS

WHOSE ENTIRE HISTORY

COULD BE

IN MOMENTS

NOT DECADES

OF LOVE , LAUGHTER, AND TEARS

I AM

A

MCCURDY

ONE OF MANY

WHO REMAIN

HERO’S

SINNERS

SAINTS

AND WE ARE ALL

EQUALLY GUILTY

OF STIFF KNEED DISSENT

EQUALLY GUILTY

OF THE LACK OF FORGIVENESS

STILL

I WILL FOREVER GRIEVE

THE LOSS

OF THE ILLUSION

OF LOVE AND DEVOTION

SO STRONG

IT COULD

LITTERALLY

STOP BULLETS IN THEIR PATH

IT’S

A GRIEF

THAT REMAINS DEEPER THAN TEARS

AND STAYS

LODGED BITTERLY

IN A THROAT

INCAPABLE

OF

SWALLOWING PAST IT

  1. This just begs for a honey-drip
    down the arid throat
    thirsting for
    and requiring attendance to
    it’s own gag reflex…
very nicely painted and heart-gut-felt! :-))

  2. Some very wonderful lines in this poem…one of my favorites is “I WONDER
WHEN WOUNDING EACH OTHER BECAME A FEASIBLE ACTION”…some very thought provoking ideas in the poemm.
